Overview

You may have seen or heard of the Gamestop potential release date list for the 3DS, which claimed a June 2nd release for Ocarina of Time. Many were skeptical due to GameStop’s untrustworthy past in giving accurate release dates, but unfortunately it looks like though they were close to the mark on this one – the game will be released after this year’s E3 (which goes from June 7th-9th).

Russ Frushtick of MTV News recently spoke with Reggie Fils-Aime, the President and CEO of Nintendo of America, about Nintendo’s big franchise games like Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Kid Icarus being absent from the 3DS launch line-up.

“Mario, Zelda, all of those titles are coming,” said Fils-Aime. “From our perspective, we like to launch titles when they’re ready. And so they’ll be ready, they’ll be ready soon. Just not in that initial time period of late March to early June.

Fils-Aime then stated that more information about the big franchise games would definitely be given at E3 and that the releases of those games would come afterwards. So, this means that we are looking at post-E3 releases for Mario Kart 3DS, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and of course, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

It's better that Ocarina of Time is completed so it doesn't feel like it's just a rehash of the original, only done in 3D.

In the meantime, I can't help but notice that there has been no news of Skyward Sword. Could it be possible that we'll being hearing something about it soon? Personally, I believe they may be shifting focus to OoT and they might surprise us with an SS announcement. But don't hold that prediction true; I just can't help but sense a ploy.

My big question is… why are they waiting so long? the 3DS has been in developement for quite some time, so it seems like they would have put some games in the launch with their big franchises… OH NOEZ, MARIO IS MISSING! XD

    • Link-182

I love the game Mario is Missing!
But Yeah, I don't understand why it's taking so long. Bill Trinin, is his name? said they weren't going to add anything really, and given that Spirit Tracks was released Nov last year, the DS team has had a full year and a half to add smoother graphics, and they are gonna have another half a year to work on it.
two years for smoother frame-rate, smoother models, updated textures, and a new inventory layout seems a little… not a lot. And they said 3D is really easy and quick to do. You just have to set up two cameras instead of one.
I dunno, I'm still gonna buy it and love it, but I wish they'd add stuff, not just a re-release with 3D, especially since its not ready for the launch.

Making us wait a little longer is fine, but I'll be expecting some new content for Ocarina of Time 3DS. I'll buy it regardless, but I'll be very disappointed if the fourth copy of Ocarina of Time I own isn't the best!

I'm wondering what kind of Mario game they're releasing on the 3DS. Super Mario 64 was remade for DS already, so could it be Super Mario Sunshine? If that proves true, I want the honor of being the one who predicted it. ;)

Ah, but despite being excited about all potential announcements, I do hope Skyward Sword will be the star of the show next E3 – like Twilight Princess was.

  • SuperTriforce

At least I have more time to save up, what with all the awesome new games coming out.

  • http://mytriforce.deviantart.com/ Ezlo

To be honest, I don't really mind, which is kind of surprising. I won't be getting a 3DS this year anyway because they're too new and too expensive (I has no fuuunds). So this just gives me more time to save up. Hopefully they'll release it in a bundle and I can buy it then.

This actually suits me quite nicely. I'm not getting my 3DS until my birthday on May 31st (Even though I'm putting a lot toward it, and it's on pre-order,). This kind of makes that easier to deal with :P

  • Shadowknight1

See, I'm in decent shape. I'll have Marvel vs Capcom 3, Dissidia Duodecim, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and Pokemon HeartGold to hold me over til late June-early July.

Also, I don't know if we'll be seeing Skyward Sword at E3…isn't it supposed to be out earlier than that?

  • DOom_23

With all that said, I really got the feeling that they are waiting E3 2011 to show us news about skyward sword. I'm pretty sure that we won't have any news until there. I mean, just check how thing are going, everything got in place:
1- after review, the game is not complete, it's half complete.
2- 3ds will go out. you cannot put this new system in the shadow with the comming out of a brand new zelda game on the a console everybody already have
3- e3 always been the moment nintendo tell us something big. right now, I'm I wrong to think that skyward sword will hit our home only a christmas 2011??

    • http://disembodiedloaf.bandcamp.com Disembodied Loaf

SS is "over half complete". If it were only half complete, we'd be waiting until at least late 2012. I don't think you understand how long it takes to finish a game.

I really hope SS comes out before E3. Otherwise, it seems like it will come out a while after the 3ds.

      • cresent soul

"half complete" quote probably was said way back at e3 (which would have made sense then) cause of little details in the interview to indicate so. Anyway, the article never indicated date of interview which is not very professional thing to do (IMO it was delibrate to screw with fan's heads).

I wouldn't value this quote, Aonuma's statement outweight Miyamoto's anyway and "over half compete" is too unclear. And I find it very wierd that he'd say somethign so vague in the middle of a news drought in only one interview and leave it at that, so it probably happened with all those other interviews back at e3 which makes complete sense. The website probably put out the interview only now to take advantage of the news drought and screw with people's heads.

So its still reasonable to expect a 2011 release (even mid year) if you go buy only concrete quotes.

  • Topaz Mutiny

Hooray, this gives me time to save up money! XD

Even if I really wanted those titles to come out at launch, I wouldn't be able to purchase them anyway – just drool on the boxes in the store. Not to mention I'm also keeping my eyes on some Wii titles as well.

And even though the big hitters won't be released initially, we still have a pretty amazing lineup for the launch so far.

  • Julian Assange

So.. this still leaves the possibility of a SS release between March and June? Reggie was only talking about 3DS titles, right?

  • Sanity's_Theif

I have a feeling we won't see Skyward Sword until 2012…

    • cresent soul

well I don't. There hasn't been anything quoted to indicated such a thing. Maybe the graphical minor faults of SS's demo, but that was ages ago. The fundemental controls and mechanics seemed perfect as they were and that's the bulk part of production. So I'm not being hopeful here, just basing my speculation solely on what's been said. I think expecting something for christmas this year is best, but its also quite possible to get it mid-year 2011 too.

  • Julian Assange

Guys, there's still GDC. Zelda titles have been announced at that event plenty of times. SMG2 got its release date at the last GDC, and it came out near the end of May.

  • cresent soul

may mean SKyward Sword to come before e3. serioulsy, anything can happen and that's what's so awesome. They could easily release a proper SS trailer and story details and gameplay details and have the release date announced for like a month or two away. Galaxy 2 got the same treatment, it's not crazy to expect actually. :)

  • http://www.zeldauniverse.net/ wayofthesheikah

More time for me to win the lottery so I can afford OOT3DS and a new 3DS, haha! In all seriousness though, I almost expected Nintendo to do this. I just hope Skyward Sword comes out before E3, although it's doubtful.

  • CorvosKK

Which means maybe Skyward Sword before E3? Although I have this nagging feeling that it's going to be during E3 that they do their refined reveal of the game. But logic says that they won't release two Zelda games during the same 2-month period.

  • Hylian99

Ugh, and because of this article (http://wii.ign.com/articles/114/1146618p1.html), that means that Skyward Sword won't becoming until after THAT! RRRGGGGGHHHHH…
Oh, well, that means it'll be that much more polished, right guys?

  • brian

bill trinnen is a joke. he doesnt even know how to play zelda. he made a complete idiot of himself in front of the boss at the skyward sword interview. so if hes the one calling the shots for ocarina of time 3d this will become the worst game of all time after hes done with it. fire bill trinnen miyamotto.
